High school racers from all over Oregon descended on Mt. Hood Meadows last week for a lively two days of racing, socializing and cheering on their teammates in warm, spring-like weather.

Sarah Tucker of Lake Oswego races to eighth place in the 25th and final Cato Memorial on Mount Hood.

The 25th Christine Cato Memorial Ski Race at Timberline on Saturday was as lively as always, with the usual goofy costumes, high-speed wipe-outs and good-natured cheers. But the event also conveyed a bittersweet feeling, because it marked the last running of one of the most popular high school ski races in the country.

This coming January, for the 25th year in a row, hundreds of high school skiers and their families will gather on Mount Hood to dress up in whacky costumes, ski fast, cheer each other on, feast on turkey and roast beef, and have fun on the mountain. It will be the final running of the Christine Cato Memorial Race, and a lot of people are going to miss it once it is over.

High school racers were treated to a sunny day of racing on Friday, March 7 to end a challenging year on a good note, as the Jesuit girls and the West Linn boys defended their state championships with strong performances in GS and slalom.
